Malaysia and Singapore Renewable Energy (RE) Imports and Exports

Starting in December 2024, Malaysia began exporting 50 MW of renewable electricity to Singapore through the Energy Exchange Malaysia (ENEGEM) under a 2-year agreement with Sembcorp Power Pte Ltd. This supply amounts to 438 GWh annually, backed by Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to ensure its green credentials.

Singapore and Malaysia electricity statistics for perspective (ref: IEA 2022):

  • SG total electrical energy consumption ~57,347 GWh per year.

  • SG Renewable Energy consumption ~1,247 GWh, 2.2% of total.

  • SG electrical energy generation from fossil fuels, 97.8%.

  • MY Renewable Energy Export to SG ~438 GWh per year, 0.8% of SG consumption starting from Dec2024.

  • MY total electrical energy consumption ~173,000 GWh & generation ~187,297 GWh per year.

  • MY Renewable Energy (RE) generation ~34,520 GWh,  18.4% of total.

  • MY RE export to SG 438 GWh, 1.3% of total RE generated in MY.

This export contributes 0.8% of Singapore’s total annual electricity demand (estimated at 57,000 GWh) and boosts its renewable energy supply - currently just 3% (or 1.5 million MWh), by nearly 29%. The renewable electricity is part of Malaysia’s 5 million MWh green energy production, which makes up 10% of its 50 million MWh annual generation, with the remaining 90% coming from fossil fuels.

The deal does not impact Malaysia’s domestic energy supply, and all revenue earned is being reinvested into national energy infrastructure.

This initiative is part of the LTMS-PIP (Lao PDR–Thailand–Malaysia–Singapore Power Integration Project), a key pillar of the ASEAN Power Grid vision to build a connected, secure regional energy network. Malaysia plans to expand its role in Phase 2 with an additional 100 MW in export capacity.

By linking national energy strategies with regional cooperation, this partnership marks a significant step toward a cleaner, more integrated Southeast Asian power system.

Regional Context – ASEAN Power Integration

This energy trade is part of the broader Lao PDR–Thailand–Malaysia–Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP), designed to:

  • Connect energy markets across ASEAN

  • Enable cross-border trade in renewable electricity

  • Enhance regional energy security
